The H100 series is a new type of diesel electric car, with prototypes appearing in 2018 and mass production starting in 2020, aimed at replacing the remaining Kiha 40 series in various parts of Hokkaido. Some of the additional cars in 2022 will be wrapped in designs that evoke the characteristics of each JR Hokkaido line. These cars are designed to be used as tourist cars, and the interior design is different from that of regular cars, with a special specification that allows the installation of removable tables.
